Roadmap to Hospitalization

When a family goes into crisis, there is no time to call an advocate or friend that can help you understand the process of psychiatric hospitalization. With that in mind, we have developed a roadmap to help families understand the process of pediatric psychiatric hospitalization.

Roadmap1: When is it time to hospitalize? This handout describes in simple terms the requirements for a hospitalization. Each community is different, and hospitals have individual requirements, but this is a general guide that will help you decide if it is time for a hospitalization.

Roadmap2: Your child has been admitted to the psychiatric unit. This handout lists things to think about and act upon as your child is prepared for discharge.

Roadmap3: Your child is out of control, and dangerously spiraling. But, when you enter the hospital emergency room, your child pulls himself together and calms down. You know that he is still in a bad place psychologically, but the hospital refuses to admit him. What do you do now? This handout lists alternatives to psychiatric hospitalization.
