Freebies section

by Deb Fjeld

It seems a little funny to be addressing a "free" section when we have made every download and article in this site available without cost. But there are some special nuggets out there in the "real world" that you just have to know about!

These are websites or little "just ask for" items that can save you money. If you know of another great nugget or too, please email me at debfjeld@yahoo.com and I'll add it to the list!

Free National Parks Passes

The United States National Parks and Federal Lands offers an Access Pass to individuals who have a permanent disability. The pass offers free, lifetime admission to our national parks, and offers discounts on other amenities. For more information on this Access Pass, click here

Disney!

We visited Disneyland as a family a few years ago, and were worried about long lines for two of our disabled children. No worries! If you go to the main office, you can request a disability pass for your family. It basically is a "Fast Pass" for every ride. We did this, and it made life so much easier. We had a lot of fun! Disney was still offering this as of this posting, but you may want to check before you arrive and have to create a Plan B.

Free Fishing Licenses!

Most states in the USA allow individuals with disabilities a free lifetime fishing license. I love those DNR folks. Each state has different regulations, so check with your state's Department of Natural Resources.

In MN, here are a few tidbits:

  • Permanent angling license issued to any Minnesota resident over age 16 who is developmentally disabled or a veteran with a 100% service-connected disability. Available only from the DNR License Center.
  • Annual angling and/or spearing license may be issued to Minnesota residents who are blind, disabled, receiving a supplemental income (SSI, SSD), receiving worker's compensation for total and permanent disability, ward of the Commissioner of Human Services, a resident of a state institution that has an approved application, or a foreign exchange student attending school in Minnesota.
  • Minnesota residents in the U.S. Military who are stationed outside the state are exempt from buying a license.
  • Patients of a state hospital or U.S. Veterans Administration hospital, inmates of a state correctional facility, residents of a Minnesota licensed nursing or boarding care home, and residents of a licensed board and lodging facility are exempt from purchasing licenses.
  • Residents of a drug or alcohol residential treatment program who are under the age of 20. Persons must carry written consent from the superintendent or chief executive of the institution.
  • An unlicensed person may assist a disabled angler who has a disability license, provided that only the number of lawful lines are in use.
