Help for the Dreaded Spelling List

Word Bingo

Download this form, print and laminate several copies. Then use dry erase markers to fill in this week's spelling list.

Make a word puzzle out of your list!

Here is a link to a great word find site.

Play BANG!

Write your spelling list on separate slips of paper. Place in a bowl and draw out a word for your student to spell. If the student spells correctly, he/she takes the paper. If the word was spelled incorrectly, it goes back in the bowl. One slip of paper is named BANG! and if drawn, the student loses their turn.

Spelling concentration

Print out the spelling words on card stock, 2 of each. Mix them up and play a game of concentration. Have the child spell the word after they find a match.

Go Fish with Spelling Words

Use the same cards from concentration to play a game of Go Fish. Again, spell the word when you receive a match.

Other Ideas

  • If you have competitive children, you can do a regular spelling bee using their spelling list and offer a prize if they get all of their words correct.
  • The standard Say It, Write It, Repeat It, is more fun if you let the child use a white board and dry erase marker.
  • Sparkle- Say the word, and the first child says the first letter and the next child says the next letter until the word is spelled. After the word is spelled, the child says Sparkle and the next child has to sit down. You need a larger group for this game.
  • Some children are more kinetic learners. Purchase heavier tiles (like smaller porcelain tiles) and write alphabetletters on them. Use the tiles to spell words. This has been shown to help some children remember better.
